Before he died, former spy Alexander Litvinenko said this:

The Alexander Litvinenko story reminds me of something Alexander Solzhenitsyn said in Gulag Archipeligo, when he said that Russia would pay a price if the country never collectively cleansed itself by publicly punishing those responsible for the 50 million+ Russian deaths at the hands of their own dreaded police, the KGB & FSB. The current leader of Russia, Vladimir Putin, was leader of the FSB prior to his current position.

Text of the statement dictated by former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko before he died and released by his friends on Friday:
(from the WSJ here)

I would like to thank many people. My doctors, nurses and hospital staff who are doing all they can for me; the British police who are pursuing my case with vigor and professionalism and are watching over me and my family.

I would like to thank the British government for taking me under their care. I am honored to be a British citizen.

I would like to thank the British public for their messages of support and for the interest they have shown in my plight.

I thank my wife, Marina, who has stood by me. My love for her and our son knows no bounds.

But as I lie here, I can distinctly hear the beating of wings of the angel of death. I may be able to give him the slip but I have to say my legs do not run as fast as I would like. I think, therefore, that this may be the time to say one or two things to the person responsible for my present condition.

You may succeed in silencing me but that silence comes at a price. You have shown yourself to be as barbaric and ruthless as your most hostile critics have claimed.

You have shown yourself to have no respect for life, liberty or any civilized value.

You have shown yourself to be unworthy of your office, to be unworthy of the trust of civilized men and women.

You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life. May God forgive you for what you have done, not only to me but to beloved Russia and its people.

Being a Christian who grew up in USSR under communism whose parents were Christians and persecuted under Soviet Atheist system I think i can speak to this a bit. I am a youth pastor now in Canada now, but am so disturbed how easily people listen to news and what the west reports, and actually believe it ...I am not a loyalist to atheist KGB or Soviets, but how the west reports on Russia is so badly biased...Litvenko was not a 'nice' person, he was a KGB agent who did horrible things as well, in fact he was a double agent meaning he was not even loyal in his job he cheated both systems and then hid in England. He was not a nice man, any kind of Cinderella story of his life and cruel Russia is fabricated by the west to keep fear of Russia and it people which is sad, Putin is as much or less of a threat to the world then Bush, if examples are allowed Bush has started a war, lied to his people and manipulated and not listened to international community...i feel sad for the death of this man, as I would for death of any man in any country...but hardly because of what is being reported about him!
