Recently we have seen a new crop of anti-war posters: "War is Not the Answer," "I Don't Believe in War," etc. Shall we not "believe" in war? Edwin Starr sang in 1970, "War, hmm. What is it good for? Absolutely nothin'.'" War is hell, indeed. War is violent. People die. Innocent people die. Sometimes wars are good for nothing (Vietnam). But can we say, categorically, that all wars are good for nothin'? Tell that to the French who wept with joy as the Allies moved eastward from Normandy. Tell the Jews who, reduced to flesh and bone, struggled to stand when the soldiers arrived in Buchenwald and Dachau, that war is good for nothin'.
