From Reed Jolley...

An American Value: NARAL (the National Abortion Rights Action League) held a presidential forum in New Hampshire on September 17 for presidential candidates who support the right of women to terminate their pregnancy. Howard Dean was the only candidate to attend, but three other pro-choice candidates sent their daughters to vouch for their pro-choice credentials. Dean stretched the meaning of the English language when he called himself "pro-life." "I actually propose that we all call ourselves pro-life. . . We care about life. We believe it's none of government's business . . . I'd hate to have Tom DeLay, who exterminates cockroaches when he's not in Congress, decide what my medical needs are." (DeLay is a leading pro-life Congressman and the third ranking Republican in the House of Representatives, owns a pest control business in Texas.)

The daughters of Bob Graham, Joe Lieberman and John Kerry also attended the event promising that, if elected president, their fathers would keep abortion legal. Rebecca Lieberman weighed in with perhaps the most poignant statement of the evening. After pointing out that abortion is close to becoming illegal she said, "For too long, those on the other side of the issue have claimed a monopoly on values," she said. "But privacy is an American value. Selfdetermination is an American value. And finally, choice is an American value."
