Mexicans in the midwest

Folks here in Oklahoma are real nice. They ask all kinds of questions about Kristina and when she's going to have her baby. In almost every way, we like it here more than most places we've lived. But they don't seem to like Mexicans very much.

This is a huge mistake that is going on all over the bible belt. In churches and in the republican party, there is a fear of "those Mexicans" coming in here and changing everything.

Two nights ago I had a great conversation with one of the greatest sages I have ever met. Cindi B is in Tulsa (from her home in Russia) to watch her daughter give birth to a grandson. Cindi's from a small town in Missouri and knows all about midwesterners and Mexicans. Her idea is that Churches should not complain about the newcomers, but rather reach out to them with free ESL classes and help the new families feel welcome in the small towns of middle America.

I hope long-time residents of these United States, especially those of us who are church-goin' folk, will start beating that drum -- getting middle Americans excited about loving the Mexicans.
