The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations

Rudy Carrasco at UrbanOnramps has just posted some thoughts about the Justice ministry in North America and what he has to say also applies to much of what I've experienced in Africa and other parts of the developing world. This is tough stuff, but needs to be said and acted on.

I think three things are missing from justice ministry as we (in the north american west) have currently conceptualized it:
(1) not enough emphasis on investment and development for the poor, and an unhealthy overemphasis on protest and “speaking truth to power”
(2) we do not expect enough of the poor, and instead we find ourselves practicing “the soft bigotry of low expectations”
(3) challenge and accountability for all ethnic groups when it comes to racial issues, not just for whites

What’s been tough is figuring out how to say these things in ways that people, especially people in the justice community, can hear them. (read more)
